Images
- What picture format does Clic*Pic use?
Clic*Pic will accept JPG, GIF, BMP, and clipboard (cut and paste) images. BMP and clipboard images will be converted to JPG. It will not support GIF animation.
- Do I need to do anything to my photos before loading them into Clic*Pic?
If your images need color or lighting corrections, or a watermark, then you should process them with your image editing program first.
If your images look just fine straight off the camera, then you can drop the JPGs directly into Clic*Pic.
- Should I crop my photos?
No. Clic*pic will crop for you. Just use the + and - keys to zoom in and out to fine-tune your cropping. You can drag your image around in the cell, or use the arrow keys, for better positioning.
- My picture files were small from the camera, but got huge when I edited them. Will they work?
Your camera images started out compressed, and your image editor uncompressed them. They should work just fine. Clic*Pic will create resized and recompressed files from them.
- What will happen to my photos? I don't want to ruin them.
Clic*Pic does not edit your original pictures. It reads them, and places copies in Clic*Pic for editing. When you compress your images, Clic*Pic again reads your original images, and then makes new versions during compression (this ensures high picture quality). You will get new picture files with new names that will be stored in your gallery folder.
- What if my pictures are too big?
Use the lowest setting on your camera, preferably 2MP or less. Larger files may take extra time to load into Clic*Pic and will take longer for ClicPic to process. The program will reduce and compress each image file into an acceptable size for your image host.
- My pictures are already cropped smaller than your default picture size. What should I do?
When you drop an image into Clic*Pic, it will resize the image to fill the space. That means a small picture would be enlarged, and might show a lot of coarse grain. If you do not like the appearance of that image, you can reduce it (with the minus-key) back down to it's original size, and float it in the cell. Or you can set "Autosize Pictures" option to "No Resize" and reload that image with no resizing. An alternative is to reset the Clic*Pic image size to match your smaller picture.
- Is there a preferred camera setting for Clic*Pic Gallery images?
As camera resolutions continue to increase, it would be wise to use lower camera settings for images destined for the web.
If you plan to make photo prints of your pictures, then go ahead and use the high resolution setting on your camera. However, if all your images are destined for the web, you will save a whole lot of disk space, and lose absolutely nothing, by setting your camera as low as 640 x 480 (0.3MP) and as high as 1600 x 1200 (2MP).
The exception is if you need a closeup, but can't focus that close. In that case, take a high resolution photo from the appropriate distance and use Clic*Pic to zoom in. (For really tight closeups, use your camera's macro setting or put a magnifying glass in front of your camera lens.)
- Can I mix horizontal and vertical pictures in one Clic*Pic gallery?
All the cells are the same shape and size for the click gallery to work correctly. You can have both horizontal and vertical images in one gallery, but some of the photos may have white space around them. Choose which orientation is best for most of your images, then you can zoom/crop the other images to eliminate the white space around the photo if you wish.
- Can I use Clic*Pic photos with eBay Picture Services?
Yes. Once your images are resized and compressed, you may upload them to eBay. However, you can not use the Clic*Pic click-gallery with eBay-hosted images. eBay may also apply a different compression scheme resulting in slightly lower picture quality.
- My pictures are on a remote host. How do I get them into Clic*Pic?
Unlike some auction listing programs, your images do not need to be online prior to making a gallery. Simply use your original photos on your computer. Clic*Pic will create new links and pictures that you may upload to your host after creating your gallery.
However, if you only have online photos, you may still use them to create a gallery. Simply open the online image in your browser and then drag the image into Clic*Pic. Once you make your gallery, you will then need to upload the new gallery images to your host.
If you need to remake those gallery images, you must access the original online photos and again drag them into ClicPic.
- Do I have to rename my photos?
ClicPic will create new photos with new names, but be careful how you name your photos.
Avoid using any punctuation in your photos except underscore "_" and dash "-",
as some servers have difficulty with punctuation and spaces.
ClicPic will automatically replace spaces with underscores to make the names server-friendly.
It will also replace a few other puctuation symbols.
However, parentheses may pose a unique problem since ClicPic does not alter them in the gallery,
but does strip them if using the FTP uploader.
Gallery
- How do I save a Gallery?
Your Gallery is automatically saved when you click the Make button.
- Can I keep adding to the same Gallery Folder?
You can add more pictures to your working gallery until you are happy with it. When you Compress or click Make, any old image files in your working gallery folder will be erased, and will be replaced by the new images displayed on your screen. You can click Make as many times as you want during a session. Your gallery will only contain the images that appear on your screen at the time you click Make.
You should create a new Gallery Folder for each different picture gallery that you want to preserve.
- Will I lose my Gallery HTML if I don't paste it right away?
No. When you click Make, your HTML code is saved in a TXT file in your gallery folder. You can paste it into your auction or web page at a later time. Look for the file _web_galleryname.txt
- Can I have two galleries in the same auction?
Yes. The galleries are coded to allow as many as you want on the same page.
- Can I use the same picture repeatedly in one gallery or auction?
Yes. When you use the same picture more than once in one gallery, the additional images will be coded with a suffix. However, if you use the same picture in multiple galleries, ClicPic will be unaware of the cross-relationship. In that case, make a copy and rename your original image before placing it in the second gallery, or you might consider creating and storing each gallery in a separate folder on your image host.
- I made a gallery yesterday, but now I want to change it.
Select your Gallery from the list and choose OPEN.
If your original pictures are still in the same place, the gallery images will appear on the screen just as you left them.
-
If you only want to change the title, copyright, click/point, transparent/framed, or background color, or move your existing photos into different frames in some cases, then you won't need to remake your entire gallery. Simply select "make HTML" from the file menu.
-
If you are resizing your gallery, making any changes to photos, or rearranging photos with the same source image, you will need to "Make" again. If you have previously uploaded your images, then repeat the upload process and the new images will overwrite the older ones.
- I don't have enough pictures. What do I do with the empty space?
You can use as few photos as you want to make a gallery. In some cases, you can use the same photo over again in a different cell, and just zoom it to a different detail. If you have cells left over, and want a balanced look, you can add your store logo or brief text message in the remaining cells. You can even add HTML code for additional links and small clickable icons in the unused cells. Just right-click on the cell in Clic*Pic to add text or HTML code to the cell. A logo added like any other image will click-to-enlarge, but the text, links, and HTML buttons won't.
- Can I copy-protect my gallery images?
The current version of Clic*Pic does include some basic copy protection that won't interfering with normal navigation. It turns off the right-click menu and prevents dragging the image to the desktop in most browsers. However, there is no protection for the supersize images that open in a new window.
Picture Hosting
- Can I make a Clic*Pic Gallery with eBay-hosted pictures?
No. The Clic*Pic gallery works with outside image hosts.
- What picture hosts can I use with Clic*Pic?
Most picture hosts that allow remote linking will work with a Clic*Pic Gallery. Some hosts do not allow linking to eBay auctions, something to explore if using Clic*Pic in an eBay auction. Also, some hosts will rename your photos, which means you would need to rename all the URL links within the Gallery. Those that allow direct FTP uploading will not rename your photos. See Uploading.
Upload
- Can I use Clic*Pic to upload to eBay Picture Services?
No, eBay has their own uploader. If you resize and compress images with Clic*Pic and want to use eBay's photo services, you will need to use their upload software.
- What picture hosts can Clic*Pic upload to?
In many cases, you can upload to your own website; however, Clic*Pic does not support "passive" FTP mode, and more sites have moved to the passive protocol.
- I made some changes to my photos. Can I upload again?
Yes. New photos will be added, and older photos will be overwritten by newer ones of the same name. However, the program does not delete photos. You will need to manually delete photos from your photo host. Note that PhotoBucket is one host that does not allow overwriting existing photos. To upload replacement photos, you must first access the site and delete the older ones.
- Can I upload more than one gallery at a time?
Clic*Pic is designed to upload each gallery as you create it. However, it IS possible to upload all your galleries in a single session. Within the Upload screen, select your gallery in the "Upload from folder" field. Click Upload. When that gallery has completed, select the next folder and repeat.
- Can I upload web pages too?
Since Clic*Pic is designed for photo galleries, it defaults to uploading JPG images. However, you may change the file-type setting on the upload screen to include other types of files. It will only upload the files that are displayed in the file upload window. You can select a single file (but not multiples) from the upload window by double-clicking it.
- What if I can't get the uploader to work?
The uploader will not work with all image hosts. If you know that your host accepts FTP upload, then it is just a matter of getting the correct settings. If you experience difficulty, you may email your upload log to us for review. From the Help Menu, select "Troubleshoot", and click "Get Upload Log".
Also, since the Clic*Pic uploader uses active FTP, it may not work at all on DSL; and it may not be able to upload to your host if you have a firewall, since firewalls often require passive FTP. Turn off the firewall and try your upload again. Here are some firewall settings that may work for you:
If you have XP, you can allow Clic*Pic access to the Internet on the Exceptions tab. In XP2, look for the Firewall "brick wall" icon in the Control Panel and for older XP1, look for the firewall under Internet Options instead.
Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions tab > "Add program" button
Select ClicPic.exe from the file list that appears
(screenshot).
If you have Norton Internet Security, open the program and select "Personal Firewall". Then click the "configure" button at the lower right of the same screen
(screenshot).
On the next screen, click the "Programs" tab and select ClicPic from the list. If it is not already there, then use the "Add.." button to find clicpic.exe in the ClicPic folder and click "open" to add it to the Norton list. Then set ClicPic to "Permit All"
(screenshot).
If all efforts to FTP upload fail, and you know that your host accepts FTP, you may still be able to use Internet Explorer's built-in FTP client. Using your host's FTP setup info, modify the following setup string and paste it into your browser.
ftp://username:password@ftp.myhost.com
That should open your webspace in your browser and you can access it like any other folder on your computer. If acess is denied, you may need to put your browser in passive FTP mode because of a firewall or DSL, and can do so in the newer Internet Explorer:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > "Use Passive FTP"
Editors and Auction managers
- Will Clic*Pic work with Front Page?
Front Page is an HTML editor that will try to force the Clic*Pic Gallery into it's own format. It wants to hard-code image sizes for the gallery pictures, sometimes causing the click images to distort to the newly defined size if they do not already fill the cell space. When using FrontPage, it is best to have your images completely fill the cell to avoid distortion (use the "Zoom to Fill" setting in Clic*Pic). Alternatively, you could delete the width and height attributes that FrontPage assigns to the main image tag prior to uploading your web or auction page.
FrontPage also has the option to insert a code snippet that it will not modify. Users have reported success with this technique. From the FrontPage menu, select
Insert > HTML Markup (or a similar menu option depending on your version)
and paste the Clic*Pic gallery code into the popup. The gallery will appear normally on the preview screen.
- Will Clic*Pic work with my auction management program?
Clic*Pic is known to work with TurboLister and Sellers Assistant, and we'll post others as they are reported. Our general experience is that these programs reformat HTML code according to their own rules. This can sometimes create inside out and reversed HTML codes that might defeat the function of the gallery (which has some javascript). If you encounter a problem, the best workaround is to be sure you place the gallery code in the HTML screen of the software, and only when you have finished working on the rest of the template. By inserting it last, the auction software does not have the opportunity to rearrange. As users submit various successes and workarounds for their favorite template and auction creation programs, we will post the solutions here.
Troubleshooting
- Mac computers:
The newer Mac computer that uses the Intel processor and OSX 10.4 or later can run Windows programs if Windows XP (best choice), Vista, or Win7 is installed using Apple's Bootcamp. In doing so, a real copy of Windows will be installed in a separate partition of the hard drive, and ClicPic can be installed in the Windows partition. While the partitioning software is free, the Windows operating system is a separate purchase.
- Win7/8: Windows 7, and up, may create a VirtualStore folder
to prevent user accessible files from being written to the program folder.
When the program is installed and set to run as administrator, there will be no virtual store copy.
But there may be drag/drop issues and other compatibility mode issues.
The program would run from its installed folder location, which is often:
C:\Program Files (x86)\ClicPic\
When the program is not set to run as administrator, a copy will be placed
in the Virtual Store for that username (machine name):
C:\Users\machinename\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\ClicPic\
The virtual store is where the unlocked version would be found and where your gallery folders might appear.
After creating your first gallery, close the program and look for two copies of the
ClicPic.exe program file and two copies of the ClicPic.ini configuration file
(one in the root program folder and one in the VirtualStore).
Only one will become the unlocked copy and that is the configuration file to backup for future "restores".
Can't find the VirtualStore on your computer? It may be a hidden folder. From the Windows start icon at the bottom left of your screen, open the "Control Panel".
Select "Appearance and Personalization" and from there, select "Folder options". On the "View" tab of Folder Options, select the option to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
(screenshot).
Some users create a desktop shortcut to that VirtualStore folder for convenience in locating their completed galleries and images.
- Vista: Clic*Pic can be installed on Windows Vista (like Win7) in the normal fashion. The default folder is:
C:\Program Files\ClicPic\
If you can't find your galleries in the ClicPic folder, look in the VirtualStore - one of Vista's security features:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\ClicPic\
If you don't see the VirtualStore folder, your system folders may be hidden. See the Win7 instructions above.
- Jumpy gallery: This is most likely an editing problem, where extra spaces have crept into the script. We have seen cases where using Notepad with wordwrap can sometimes cause permanent linebreaks inside the code and within keywords. Once the code is closed up and the words are made whole, the problem goes away. If using Notepad, turn off wordwrap prior to copying the code from there.
- Warped and stretched pictures: FrontPage adds extra code to the gallery, and most of it is tolerated. However, when it adds a fixed image dimension to the large image, it does not know that the image will be replaced by another click-to-enlarge image, and it causes all your click-to-enlarge images to be the same shape as the first one. One workaround is to make all your images completely fill the cell. Another is to remove the code that FrontPage adds to the main image. Look for "name=clicpicLg", and within that image tag remove the "width=xxx" and "height=xxx" attributes.
And yet another solution is to add the code from the "Insert" menu as HTML Markup code (see the FrontPage section above.)
If you are not using FrontPage, but see stretching with an older version of Netscape, then the only workaround is to make all your pictures fill the cell when creating your gallery.
- Preview won't Display: The gallery preview will launch a new browser window for viewing. Popup blockers may interfere with this feature, and can be turned off during gallery creation, or can be set to a lower threshhold. Firewalls can also prevent ClicPic from accessing the internet.
- Preview grabs my only Browser Window:
If your browser reuses the same window over again, and you would rather have multiple browser windows open at one time, then look for this setting in the Internet Explorer
Menu:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab >
and uncheckmark
"reuse windows for launching shortcuts"
- Can't drag/drop photos and files:
If you are on Vista or Win7 and can't drag/drop, do not run the program "as administrator". See Win7 above.
If you have the latest Internet Explorer browser on XP and it won't let you drag and drop, it could be due to a security setting that can be changed:
Tools > Internet Options > Security tab >
under the Globe, click the
"custom level " button
and enable
"Drag and drop or copy and paste files"
- Script Warnings in XP SP2: XP Service Pack 2 includes security features that can prevent active scripts from running on your machine, which will affect previewing your gallery while offline. Don't worry, your online viewers won't see these messages. To turn off those annoying popups, go to Internet Explorer's
Tools > Internet options > Advanced tab
under Security, checkmark the box to
"Allow active content to run in files on my computer."
- Error '429': ActiveX Component Can't Create Object.
We have found a few instances where ClicPic won't load because an original Microsoft DLL (scrrun.dll) is missing or has become unregistered due to disk cleanup programs. If you receive the error message, then you should reinstall the DLL so that the system can re-register it (apparently it can't be manually installed or re-registered). Fetch the 660K download from one of Microsoft's sites below.

- Error '481': Invalid Picture.
The image might have been edited by a tool that saves a different
image header than Microsoft can read (ClicPic uses a Microsoft module to
display the image in the tool). Or perhaps the header is there, but
corrupted somehow. The solution is to reopen and save the image.
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/216205
Another direct cause of the problem is editing and saving images in CMYK format. Resaving in RGB format should resolve the Invalid picture problem for the unsupported format.
- Error: Component COMDLG32.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.
The program was installed on a 64-bit computer, but the installed control must run under the Windows 32-bit emulator. The missing control module is already installed by the program and you can register the control module correctly from your keyboard.
